Barack Obama tells parents to make sure their kids learn spanish
“I don’t understand when people are going around worrying about ‘we need to have english only’. They want to pass a law we want just english only. Now I agree that immigrants should learn english. I agree with that BUT understand this; instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn english, they’ll learn english, you need to make sure your child can speak spanish!”

Someone on youtube brought up a good point, they said “multilingualism will destroy the one thing that unites us as americans”.

I’ll start off by saying that I am strongly in favor of adopting English as our national language. So we’re on the same side here.
However…
I disagree with the comment you posted about “multilingualism will destroy the one thing that unites us as americans”.
And while I support whole heartedly English as a nation language. I believe this statement to be political rhetoric that does little to promote the Republican stance and position, and if anything damages it.
If a language is all that unites us as Americans, I’m sorely disappointed. Fortunately, this is not true. We have many more things, (a unified language, such as English, included) that make us Americans. To name just a few…
- The ability to pursue happiness, prosperity and freedom.
- The protection of an individuals civil rights regardless of race, gender or religion.
- The belief in democracy as the best form of government.
- A strong belief in capitalism.
- The belief and promotion of progress as a society.

Well…that was a quote I took off youtube, it just brings up a good point for people to think about. My father always used to tell me that the one thing that united all of our ancestors who migrated into this country was the English language. They all learned to live together despite vast cultural differences. This country would be so much different if everyone who immigrated into it didn’t learn one primary language.
Language isn’t all that unites Americans…it’s the flag, our values, freedom, democracy etc. but language is one of the primary building blocks of unity in this country. Do I personally believe it is the only thing that unites us?No. However, it is one of the most important things.
Thanks for the comments~

You know what’s hilarious about this?
Obama does not speak ANY foreign languages.
But he knows what’s best for all the rest of us!
