Guest Post: Lou Barletta for Congress

As I write this, it’s just over 75 days until Election Day.

And I couldn’t be more excited and upbeat about how my campaign for the 11th Congressional District seat is going.

To date, we’ve received contributions from people in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. These aren’t the big PAC checks my opponent is receiving (mostly from the subprime mortgage , banking, and insurance industries, which he’s supposed to regulate), but from “average” American citizens. Even more encouraging are the notes and letters that accompany those contributions.

In fact, I raised more money in the first four months of this campaign than I did in my entire congressional campaign six years ago. That shows how hungry for change the people of the United States are.

While money is important to get my message of leadership out to the voters, I know I will never have the same resources my opponent – a 24-year incumbent – will have.

And that’s fine. I don’t need to have as much money as he has to win this race.

That’s because I have something far more valuable.

Volunteers.

More than 1,500 people have signed up to help me win in November. Together, my volunteers will form a grassroots network my opponent will never match.

Right now, momentum is on my side. I’ve begun airing commercials. National pundits have steadily moved our race from “strong Democrat” to “lean s Democrat” to “toss-up.” Polls have shown me ahead – in spite of almost two months of television advertising by my opponent and his smear team.

But there’s one thing that’s going to make the difference.

You.

I need you to join my team. Whether it’s making phone calls, knocking on doors, hosting an event, working the polls on Election Day, or just energizing your friends about my race, you can help bring new leadership to Congress.

Just visit www.LouBarletta.com, or call my campaign headquarters at (570) 454-0635 to get involved.

I’d appreciate your help and your support.

Together, we can accomplish so much.

Thanks, and I’ll see you on the campaign trail!

About Lou Barletta

Born and raised in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, Lou Barletta learned the value of hard work at an early age. Lou worked side by side with his father Rocky, mother Angeline and his three brothers in the family business – A. Barletta and Sons Road Construction, and Barletta Heating Oil. By the mid-1990s, Lou became concerned about the direction Hazleton was heading. And even though the city was overwhelmingly Democratic in voter registration, Lou campaigned for and won a seat on city council – the only elected Republican on the five-member board. It was during his first term that Lou saw that, despite his best efforts, Hazleton's stability was still slipping away. Lou knew he had to do more. Lou ran for mayor on a platform of bringing business sense into city government – and he won by a 2-1 margin. When Lou took office in January 2000, Hazleton was in worse shape than anyone realized, with a large deficit and budget shortfall. Hazleton had illegal contracts with all four of its unions. There was a general lack of communication and accountability at virtually every level of the city's government. Layoffs seemed like the only option. Within the first few months of 2000, Hazleton was in the middle of a complete turnaround. Through prudent fiscal management and tough choices, the entire budget shortfall was erased. All four contracts were re-negotiated. Hazleton earned the Governor's Award for Fiscal Accountability and Best Management Practices.
